October has been a busy month providing support to thousands via the RLabs mobile services (Angel on MXit and DAS@jamiix.im). Both these services are unique in that it offer subscribers to these channels a wide range of social services that they can access. Angel (Sponsored by MXit and RLabs) is an information portal that provides its users access to information related to substance abuse, stress and coping, depression, debt counselling, educational opportunities etc. The DAS@jamiix.im contact is a LIVE support service provided by RLabs and Impact Direct (Sponsored by JamiiX) where users can have real time conversations with trained counsellors in a number of social areas.
October has been a very busy month on these services and we just want to share some of our activity via these offerings. In total both these RLabs services have 109,107 subscribers indicating the power of using mobile phones to provide social services to communities. In addition to the RLabs mobile services other offerings such as HIV, Debt and Lifeskills which is supported by RLabs serves a further 87,344subscribers bringing the total number of people being supported via the mobile channels to 196,451.
Some demographics of interest to the above services show that the age group with the highest number of users subscribing to the RLabs services are users aged 18-25. See graph below for distribution of our subscribers by age:
The subscribers with regard to gender is distributed evenly (See graph below):

The total number of interactions during October for the Angel and DAS services were 512,791 and proves the increased activity of engagement using low cost chat platforms such as MXit.

The last week has been exciting at RLabs as their JamiiX counselling team have been working hard in changing the world one message at a time. JamiiX is a cloud-based solution allowing its users to manage conversations via various Social Network Chat and Instant Messengers. Typically described as a “Contact Centre on the Go”. During a session the following is achieved per hour:
– Each advisor have an average of 40 users (250 – 300 users are assisted per hour)
– Average of 20,000 messages are exchanged per hour
– 5% of conversations during a session will receive an offline referral
– 2 out of 5 Users are new to the service
– Bulk of our users communicate via Mobile Chat platform MXit
What really excites us is when we hear stories of people whose lives are being changed because of the members of the community who sacrificially offer their time to help those in need. Today was another such day where one of the JamiiX Mobile Counsellors met with a subscriber to the service offline for further support. Well done to all at RLabs for the amazing work you are doing and we celebrate with you and the rest of the online community through the BEES Awards finalist nomination dedicated to you.
Since 2008 the RLabs team were involved in using mobile technology to provide counselling support services to thousands of youth at risk accross Southern Africa (Read more…). It was with great excitement when we got feedback today that this RLabs initiative is a finalist for The Best Use of Mobile for The Bees Awards. The Bees Awards is the 1st international social media competition for marketing and communications professionals. Brands and agencies from all around the world were invited to share their best work and the finalists were selected by a jury composed of 20 renowned social media experts from 13 different countries.
To be a finalist for this award is such a great honour and privilege considering that about 74% of the entries were from large brands coming from 21 countries. This recognition by the international social media community will continue encouraging the RLabs family and community to continue pushing boundaries in using Social Media for Social Change.
The Awards Ceremony will be held in San Francisco on November 9, 2010 and will be live streamed.

In 2008 I was part of a team that launched a online mobile chat platform for drug users. This chat platform gives them an opportunity to chat with the services’”counsellors” when they feel the urge to use drugs. Last week the RLabs Social Services broke the 100,000 users barrier on both the Drug Advice and Support (DAS) and Angel platform. The Angel service is a information service that runs 24 hours a day providing users access to relevant info in the area of drug addiction, abuse, depression and stress.

The second leg of the JamiiX World Tour was Helsinki, Finland where it would be the first time JamiiX will be made available to Europe. JamiiX is a Web 2.0 technology that manages and aggregates conversations via (Mobile) Instant Messengers and Social Networks in a central place. The story of JamiiX is that it is the first Web 2.0 technology conceived and developed on the “notorious” Cape Flats in the Western Cape, South Africa.
This European launch of JamiiX was a follow up of the Cape Town event a few weeks ago. With guests from various industries and technology companies including (Nokia, Mobile Brain Bank) including our hosts and partners (Pajat). The event was held at a stunning venue the Royal Ravintola Klub and Terrace where we welcomed the guests with some great South African tunes and Cape Town atmosphere.
The event was co-hosted by Aalto University and sponsored by SAFIPA. The evening was an opportunity to share the history of JamiiX and the people behind it as well as share some key points about JamiiX:
1. It is currently using the FREEmium model.
2. It is a distributed system to manage mulitple conversations via web
3. It is easy to register
4. It is hosted on the Cloud and make use of the Software as a Service (SaaS) model
5. JamiiX eXchanges have special features that was on demo to the crowd
6. Push Technology and conversation management tool is changing the way people will manage conversations
7. Introduction to the JamiiX Open API
8. JamiiX as Contact Centre 2.0
9. JamiiX on mobile
The partner in Europe was also revealed at the launch event with lots of interest from various sectors. The guests at the launch were able to play and test JamiiX after the presentation and Q&A session. Overall the JamiiX technology was very well received with possible contacts and clients to be revealed soon. Thank you to everyone who attended and Helsinki for opening the JamiiX doors to Europe. This adventure is also a testimony that innovations from the dusty streets of Africa can have a global impact. Well done to everyone at RLabs and the community who are the reason for celebrating. Two of our team members Craig and Brent was out in Johannesburg for 3 days to do training with MobieG. The purpose of this training was to equip the MobieG team to use JamiiX, the web based tool allowing you to manage multiple conversations from different Social Networks and Instant Messaging platforms. Jamiix is the platform witch MobieG will do the mobile counselling from. The training also covered the topics “Art of Mobile Counselling” and “The Mind Of a Mobile Counselor.
